NORAD has a pretty serious mission: It’s a joint organization of Canada and the United States that helps secure our airspace from attack.

But once a year, the agency gets to take on the fun task of tracking Santa Claus.

    Check out Santa’s progress here.

Accuweather offers a video giving the background on how the agency accidentally got into the Santa business.

It all started when a 1955 Sears Roebuck ad misprinted a phone number to call Santa. Kids trying to reach the jolly old elf instead were put through to what was then called CONAD – the Continental Air Defense Command. Apparently the folks charged with monitoring our country’s security were in the holiday mood, because they decided to help the kids figure out Santa’s exact location.

In 1958, CONAD became NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command), which continues the tradition to this day, putting jet fighters, radar and high-speed digital Santa Cams to work.

You’ll see NORAD even offers Google Map or Google Earth options.

And of course, Santa’s gotten more hip over the years. Lately, he’s been using an Apple iPhone to help him on his journey, as seen on a television ad deemed the most effective holiday ad.
